the cadet
We know that supporting education is the key foundation to help young people reach their full potential. Unfortunately many young people are subject to various forms of disadvantage that make them vulnerable to social problems, constrain their life choices, limit their potential and restrict their full participation in community life.
Young people involved in the cadetship program come from a diverse range of backgrounds and have experienced adversity in their life journey. Circumstances can range from poverty, homelessness, regional isolation, significant family or peronsal illness, drug and alcohol affected family members, family breadown, significant financial hardship or being the primary carer for a family member. Yet all these individuals share the desire to better their lives through university education.
Through their involvement with the program and their corporate partner cadets develop:
• A skills portfolio, including life skills – communication, problem solving, improved confidence, self esteem and resilience;
• Enhanced leadership and employability skills;
• Tangible and highly transferable work experience;
• New networks and experiences;
• Developed leadership skills
“I couldn’t believe that I had been chosen as a cadet; I cried when I found out. My work experience at RACV has given me support to get through my first year at Uni and I have made some great friends. I am going out this afternoon to do a presentation advocating safe driving. It is great experience for me and I get to do something that is important in the community and that I am proud of.”
